Germaine Liu

Sound artist and percussionist Germaine Liu, with her Imaginary Percussion Ensemble collaborators (Joe Sorbara and Mark Zurawinski), invites participants into a group experiment to build sonic/physical worlds together using Liu’s collection of found objects and readymades. In this SESSION, qua “playtime,” Liu leads participants through a series of prompts that reconsider the interdependencies that constitute togetherness.

This SESSION asks us to be active witnesses and listeners to one another and to pay attention to moments of synchronicity/asynchronicity, singularity/plurality. In emphasizing play and deep listening, Liu suggests that how we negotiate, take, coordinate, relinquish, share, and be in space together is the seed—the “how”—of learning where we are and how to be.

Information

The Imaginary Percussion Ensemble is a chameleon like entity that grows and sheds limbs; changes colouration, shape and configuration; and otherwise adapts to the creative possibilities dreamed up by three creative percussionists Germaine Liu, Joe Sorbara, and Mark Zurawinski who come together to share in one another’s dedicated, joyous, and seriously playful curiosity around sound making and performance.

Instigated by Liu, the ensemble’s music is rooted in a deep concern for gesture, for physicality, for tactility. They are invested in performance as visceral exploration and co-creation, performance as an ongoing process of (re)discovering ideas and vocabulary; always in the hope of creating an inviting and inclusive space for audience and participants

About the Series

SESSION is a project modelling itself after an incubator that invites cultural practitioners to engage with questions that emerge out of a given exhibition.
