Monsterchick

Diane Gagné combines terms we take for granted–“sister,” for example– with everyday names for body parts to coin new terms of address such as “sisterhead.” For this installation, Gagne has constructed a curved wall ten by sixty feet in which the image of one of these idiomatic words occupies fifty running feet. By thus incorporating a mutated private jargon into a grand, formal frame she parodies identification and sexuality and the way these are determined by language.

Diane Gagné has exhibited in group exhibitions at Cold City Gallery, YYZ, Andrew Davies Gallery, A Space, White Water Gallery, North Bay, and the IDA Gallery, York University. Her solo exhibitions include Roundup 88 and 89, The Creative Outlet, and Calumet and Founders Galleries at York University.
