Re-Count: The World Economic Summit of the Advanced Industrialized Countries as Poetic Document

Mercer Union: A Centre for Contemporary Visual Art presents a solo exhibition by Toronto artist Bill Leeming. Leeming has developed an installation with text, photographs and video based on the background, proceedings ahd outcome of the 1988 World Economic Summit held in Toronto this past June. Re-Count reads the poetics of the Summit from where it left off in Venice (June 1987), and plots the narration that proceeds through to the 1988 Summit.

Leeming’s installation forms part of a program of exploration into the phenomenon of culture and those processes that structure socio-historical perceptions and public attitudes. It is also one of several recent projects in which Leeming examines the relative truth conveyed by ‘news stories’ providing historical accounts. Re-count continues through November 5.
