Olympic Village
Olympic Village presents a modest proposal for a group of athletes’ residences constructed in a chalet style. An encapsulated social experiment? A perfect village for perfect people? An ant farm of athletes? Based upon the A-frame cottage of Cortina or St. Moritz holiday fantasies, this building project is the product of a childhood obsession with Olympians coupled with an interest in architecture and the Utopian. Sullivan uses these influences to construct a diorama that sets the stage for the private side of the world’s favorite nationalistic spectacle.
Derek Sullivan received his B.F.A. from York University in 1999. Recent Toronto exhibits include the solo Hat Towers at ARTFirm(2000), and the group exhibit Suburban Landscape at Red Head Gallery and the 20th Century Sideshow at Blueprint Gallery (both 1999). He is currently based in Toronto.
