Jonathan Monk in Conversation and Michael Snow in Concert

November 7, 6:30 pm, Drake Underground, $7 or $5 in adv

A Co-production with Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, the Drake Hotel and Mercer Union

As auxillary programming to Jessica Bradley Art + Projects, the Drake Hotel and Mercer Union are proud to present an evening with internationally renowned artists Jonathan Monk and Michael Snow. Jonathan Monk is a Berlin-based British artist whose work melds autobiographical details with the strategies and language of conceptualism. Beneath Monk’s playful take on art making, however, is a serious scrutiny of the very idea of art, as well as the myth of artistic genius. Monk’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at London’s Institute of Contemporary Art and at Kunstverein Hannover, Hannover, Kunstmuseum St.Gallen and Kunsthalle Nürnberg, Nürnberg. Monk will give a lecture on his practice at 7pm, followed by a solo piano concert by Canada’s Michael Snow. Snow is a painter, photographer, filmmaker and musician, and is considered among Canada’s most important artists living today. In the past decade, he has participated in every major exhibition exploring images in the modern world, including Passages de l’image (Centre Pompidou) and the Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon. In 1994 The Art Gallery of Ontario and the Power Plant mounted a major retrospective, The Michael Snow Project. Michael Snow is a member of the Order of Canada and a knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France. In 2000 he won a Governor General’s Award in visual and media arts. Snow has played
solo piano concerts all over the world: most recently in 2006 at the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles, at Xcentric in Barcelona and the Bourges (France) conservatory of music. Many recordings of his music have been released, solo piano as well as with the Toronto Ensemble
CCMC and others.

Tickets available at Soundscapes (572 College St.), Rotate This (620 Queen W.), Mercer Union, The Drake Hotel and Jessica Bradley Art + Projects.
