Martin Pearce

East Gallery:

Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Art is pleased to present an exhibition of recent drawings and paintings by Toronto artist Martin Pearce.

Pearce subtly layers images appropriated from such diverse sources as Venetian motifs and Chinese decoration. Pearce scrubs and scrapes the surfaces of his painting, forcing the original imagery to disintegrate and remerge in new configurations. Pearce further alters the imagery with an overlay of glazes which enhance the illusory surfaces. The illusion of depth lures the viewer into an imaginary site.
