Steps/Mesures is a short-term residency program presented in partnership with the Institut Français and the Consulate General of France in Toronto.  This program invites artists and curators living in France for a series of short-term residencies in Toronto between Winter 2015 and Winter 2016 to forge conversation between cultural ecologies. The third guest of the series will be Paris-based curator Géraldine Gomez.

Curator’s Talk: Hors Pistes

Géraldine Gomez traverses the parameters of artistic disciplines to create a dialogue between them. She has been the director of monthly programs at the Pompidou Centre in Paris since 2000, showcasing innovative cinema, and crossing territories between writing, architecture, design, science, gastronomy, fashion and more. In 2006 she initiated Hors Pistes, a multidisciplinary annual event at the Pompidou, with each edition developed around an urgent theme. The most recent edition titled L’art de la révolte (2016) focusing on protest movements (resonating with the current Nuit Debout protests in France). Gomez aims to put into play the great debates of our societies through contemporary artistic and intellectual means. More than just a thematic event, Hors Pistes, is a space for reflection on contemporary art and its place in an institution. Primarily composed of commissioned work by artists, the event is a space for community formation with works often collectively produced. Gomez has also been involved in developing Hors Pistes internationally, engaging with local communities, with events taking place in Istanbul, Reykjavik, Sao Paulo, Tokyo and most recently in Havana. She holds a PhD in contemporary art, and lives and works in Paris.
