SESSION: EMILIA-AMALIA invite Erica Stocking

5 May 2019 12pm - 3pm

SESSION is a project modelling itself after an incubator that invites cultural practitioners to engage with questions that emerge out of a given exhibition.

EMILIA-AMALIA | in residence invites artist Erica Stocking to host a participatory reading of her play The Artist’s Studio is Her Bedroom (2019)—a choreographed statement on autobiographical art making. The work presents a singular female psyche formed by a multiplicity of voices and perspectives, articulating its conditions through an atemporal, historical and spatial organization of thoughts and movements that depart from a practice of art alongside motherhood.

Erica Stocking is an artist working in sculpture, installation and performance, and is a founding member of the artist collective Norma (2001-2014). Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Vancouver Art Gallery (2009), the Contemporary Art Gallery (2010), and The Western Front (2013) in Vancouver. In 2015 Stocking presented a solo-exhibition with Artspeak Gallery, Vancouver. She has produced numerous artworks for civic collections, including her most recent public art commission in Surrey, British Columbia entitled Blankets (2019). Her new work explores artistic practice as both formal structure and embodied movement in the world. The Artist’s Studio is Her Bedroom is Stocking’s first textual performance work.
