Mexarcane International
Ethnic Talent for Export
Performance artists Coco Fusco and Guillermo Gómez-Peña.
Live demonstrations of “Ethnic Talents”
Lecture: Thursday November 10, 1994, 8pm
Internationally acclaimed artists Coco Fusco and Guillermo Gómez-Peña have invented a fictional multinational, Mexarcane International, that markets and distributes ethnic talent world-wide. Clothed in costumes drawn from indigenous and popular cultures of the Americas, and covered with intricate tribal tattooes, the artists appear as Mexarcane International’s samples of “ethnic talent”. The performanc combines the traditions of the way of living diorama and ethnographic display with contemporary corporate images to comment on the construction and interpretation of ethnic identity in post-industrial societies.
Presented by Mercer Union, Visual Arts Ontario, and YYZ Artist’s Outlet
