Music in Alternative Spaces: Matt Smith (Nifty)

Known as one-third of Les Mouches, Matt Smith has made noise-folk songs that “teeter between cascading abrasion and soothing caress.” Smith’s solo work as Nifty is equally diverse but uses very different elements, pulling from the worlds of African percussion, grimy electro-soul, patchy big band horn blasts and overlapping instrumental layers. Recently, Smith performed as part of FFIINNAALL FFAANNTTAASSYY (Owen Pallet and Matt Smith), for three shows at the Kitchen in New York, and co-directed Ammo Factory’s The Voice Over as part of the Images Festival Closing Gala.

His Music in Alternative Spaces performance will focus largely on an exploration of the sonic space of the gallery through an experimentation with the basic principles of and differences between form and structure. It is a dialogue between the tones and overtones, 4’s and 3’s, squares and triangles and their inherent relationships and tensions. Subsequently, the piece will explore how through looping and manipulating these re-enforced and rigid shapes, a more spherical, rounded sense can be created in a sonic space; a geodesic sound space.
