Audience Engagement Assistant

  • Program Stream: Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage
  • Term: 16-week position, 35 hours/week
  • Location: Hybrid work model, Toronto, ON
  • Hourly Wage: $18.50 per hour worked, less applicable withholdings and statutory deductions

Mercer Union is seeking support for the gallery’s audience development including communications, marketing, and promotional activities. The role will help build public awareness of the gallery by supporting the final stages of Mercer Union’s website redevelopment process, including content migration as well as support for new content development, email newsletters, and social media campaigns. This role will also support promotional activities including artist-led video walkthroughs; recordings and transcripts of public programs; and commissioning exhibition documentation. Additionally, this role will support the maintenance and use of a new customer relationship management database, leveraging it as a tool to consistently engage extended communities.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Support content creation efforts that tell compelling stories around Mercer Union’s exhibitions, programs, and activities.
  • Support the production and distribution of all marketing and digital content, including website updates, email newsletters, social media, and advertising
  • Assist with the creation and distribution of press releases and press kits
  • Collect and manage press clippings and produce media reports as needed
  • Oversee scheduling and delivery of communications and promotional materials
  • Provide support for the production of fundraising-related materials including impact reports, annual reports, fundraising campaigns, and donor recognition activities
  • Editing and proofing deliverables such as email newsletters, website copy, brochure content, etc.
  • Aid in the coordination of online events and remote programs, providing technical support for presentation on virtual platforms
  • Provide information, accept registration, and liaise with attendees for public programs
  • Liaise with external service providers such as videographers, photographers, and external publicists
  • Maintain Mercer Union’s mailing lists for electronic and printed communications
  • Monitoring and collating audience data including visitor numbers, online audience analytics, etc.
  • Support the development of grant reports, proposals, and applications
  • Provide administrative assistance to development and curatorial staff as required
  • Assist in the preparation of Board and Committee meetings
  • General office administration and gallery duties

Skills and Experience:  

  • Educational background in Communications, Advertising, Marketing, Arts Administration, or a related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and manage long and short-term projects
  • Mac OS proficiencies with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
  • Experience with WordPress website management, Mailchimp email marketing, and social media management

About the Program Stream
This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria.
An individual may be eligible for an internship if they:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
  • are unemployed or underemployed;
  • are a college or university graduate; and
  • are not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with the program.

Note: Priority will be given to graduates that have not previously participated in YCW internship programs.
