Karen Azoulay

deep deep under the sea

My work features a fascination with theatre sets as fantastical locations. Inspired by flat theatre props from the turn of the century, this genre of scenic painting is pared down to the simplistic exoticism of the iconic wave. Clues of their wacky origins litter the narrative landscapes and raise the red curtain for a statically wild drama to begin.

So, what does happen deep, deep under the sea? Curious voyeurs will get a double submarine treat: an aquatic x-ray vision of sorts reveals glamourous and exotic oceanic activity.
