What Was Taken… And What We Sell
Nora Naranjo-Morse presents her video installation What was Taken… And What We Sell in the Mercer Union Project Room as part of The Destabilized Landscape: Post-Colonial Space and Unreal Estate Exhibition concurrently presented at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Co-produced by the Edmonton Art Gallery, Edmonton, and the Medel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, and guest curated by Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak, the exhibition presents the work of more than twenty international film and video artists who are united by their interests in a history of colonization ad the cultural identity that colonization has engendered.
Naranjo-Morse’s installation interrogates both non-Indian and Indian audiences concerning the marketing of the land and its people. The artist describes a childhood experience where young Indian audiences concerning the marketing of the land and its people. The artist describes a childhood experience where young Indian girls modeled “Squaw skirts” and other Southwestern style clothing for the local seamstress who fashioned her garments for this particular occasion.
