    MEDIA RELEASE

Montreal artist Céline Surprenant's painted artefacts present the viewer with the problematics of identity, seduction and intimacy. Balancing poetry and meaning with the rendering of the artefact she creates works of great simplicity. Her recent work is comprised of a series of monochromatic relief sculptures which refer to "personal objects" and clothing accessories. The work determines different viewing positions of the spectator by referring to the usage of objects in Art.

Celine Surprenant has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Montreal, Banff and St. John, New Brunswick and London, Ontario. Her work was included in the exhibitions 'London Life - Young Contemporaries 87/88,' organized by the London Regional Art Gallery, 'ou est le fragment', organized by the Musee d'art contemporain de Montreal, 'Femmes-Forces,' at the Musee du Quebec, and 'Le Musee Imaginaire de...,' at the Saldye Bronfman Centre.

Celine Surprenant's first solo exhibition in Toronto opens in Mercer Union's East Gallery Thursday September 6 at 8:00pm and continues through to Saturday October 6. The artist will give a talk at the gallery on Wednesday September 5 at 7:00pm. Admission is free.
