Winnipeg artist Jack Butler's exhibition Man is Only the Shadow of a Dream is a multi-media installation. Incorporating materIa1s such as vinyl, silk tissue, foamcore and steel, the work will be largely composed of multiple two-dimensional, free-standing and cut-out figures from pop cultures such as comic strip characters and stars of the cinema. Theatrically presented in a darkened space, the installation deals with sculptural concerns achieved by painterly means. "The viewer, on walking through tne installation, becomes an integral part of the work dwarfed in size by some of the suspended heads and figures and yet gigantic in reiation to others, at once safely enclosed within the crowd of images and at the same time threatened by the claustrophobic nature of the installation."

Jack Butler lives and works in Winnipeg, and has been exhibiting across Canada and in the United States since 1962. Butler has participated in selected solo and group exhibitions at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg; Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Alberta College of Art Gallery, Calgary; and Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver. This installation will travel to Galerie Noctuelle in Montreal in September.
